AMES, Iowa – The Drake University track and field team was back in action at Iowa State on Friday. The Bulldogs boasted a trio of individual champions at the Cyclone Open, the team's second trip to Ames in as many meets.
Chinemerem Iwuagwu and
Adam Phillips swept the women's and men's weight throw, respectively. Iwaugwu earned top honors with a toss of 17.94m/58-10 1/4 while Phillips paced the field with his heave of 20.37m/66-10.
Sam Carpenter followed Phillips with a runner-up finish on the men's side after throwing 20.09m/65-11.
Ethan Elliott made Bulldog history as the men's shot put champion, setting a new program record for the indoor shot put at 18.74m/61-5 3/4.
Breanna Burak picked up Drake's only win on the track as the first finisher in the women's 3000. Burak outran the field in 9:47.49 to take gold.
The Drake men garnered two more runner-up finishes as
Josiah Rainey ran 6.82 in the men's 60m dash and the team of
Drake Dombrosky,
Kaden Karpel,
Berkley Munnings, and
Dylan DeAngelo cruised 3:21.07 in the 4x400 relay.
Maud Visscher and
Anastasia Kirillov both reached the podium with respective third-place finishes. Visscher was not far behind Iwuagwu in the women's weight throw with a launch of 16.31m/53-6 1/4 while Kirillov ran 4:55.93 in the women's mile.
Cole Brandt rounded out a men's weight throw field loaded with blue and white with a fourth-place throw of 18.14m/59-6 1/4. The Bulldog women also put together an impressive 4x400 relay race as
Avery Littlejohn,
Ella Brown,
Gracie Federspiel, and
Sophia Bleich combined to run 4:05.49, good enough for another fourth-place result.
The Bulldogs produced two more top five finishes as
Marieli Estrello sprinted 7.84 in the women's 60 and
Bowen Martin trotted an 8:24.78.
Dombrosky stood out in the men's open 400 race with a 48.85 to take sixth while
Sophia Agan earned the same placement with a 10:44.95 in the women's 3000.
The Bulldogs will visit Columbia, Missouri from Jan. 30-31 for their next meet, the Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational, before another trip to Ames for the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 6.
