Men’s Tennis Preview: Nebraska

The Bulldogs take on the Cornhuskers in Lincoln for their second match of the season.

The Basics
After opening the season with a hard-fought 5-2 loss to Memphis, the Drake Bulldogs will look to bounce back against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday, January 25 at 4 p.m. CT at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln.

Bulldogs by the Numbers
Drake is 0-1 on the young season following Saturday's opener. The Bulldogs battled throughout the match with Memphis, with freshman Sam Melaga securing his first collegiate victory in a dramatic win at the No. 5 singles position. Alan Gonzalez also recorded a singles win for the Bulldogs, while the doubles teams were competitive but ultimately fell to the Tigers. The Bulldogs look to build some momentum in their 2026 campaign as they look to rebound in Lincoln.

Scouting the Competition
Nebraska enters the match 2-0 on the season after a dominant doubleheader against Omaha last Saturday. The Cornhuskers swept both matches 7-0, including strong performances from their doubles teams and standout singles players such as Henry Lamchinniah, Leo Linquet, Jeri Lassila, and Nikolay Sysoev. Nebraska's doubles squads have been especially formidable, securing the doubles point in both matches of the doubleheader, while the singles lineup has produced multiple straight-set wins and strong tiebreak performances.

Drake will face a challenging test against a Husker team that looks poised to extend its early-season momentum. The Cornhuskers will likely rely on their experienced top singles and doubles players, while the Bulldogs will aim to build off the competitive showing against Memphis and capitalize on the confidence boost from Melaga's first collegiate win.

Up Next
Following the Nebraska match, the Bulldogs will be back home on Friday where they will host Marquette. Results from this weekend's matches will shape the team as Drake looks to find its stride in the spring slate.
