Bulldogs Thwarted on Twin Cities Trip

Drake nearly topples Tommies, ousted by Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Drake women's tennis went on the road for a two-match weekend in the Twin Cities. The Bulldogs suffered another narrow loss to start their trip before a wider setback against a Big Ten opponent.

St. Thomas 4, Drake 3
The Bulldogs came up just short in their quest for a second straight win on Saturday. Drake was able to open an early lead after securing the doubles point versus St. Thomas, but a singles rally by the Tommies overwhelmed Drake later in the day as the Dogs suffered another 4-3 defeat.

Jordane Dookie and Elizabete Klavinska teamed up for a 6-4 win at the No. 2 doubles spot over UST's Lily Olson and Ingrid Forsberg. St. Thomas won the next doubles match in the No. 3 position for Drake top tandem of Kristina Tai and Maja Dodik won a dramatic 7-6 bout to earn the visitors the first tally of the day.

St. Thomas rebounded in the singles play, winning the first four tilts to take a commanding lead in the team race. Dookie and Maja Dodik capped the day with singles wins in the fifth and first spots, respectively, but it was too little, too late as the Tommies' singles success earned them the 4-3 result.

Minnesota 6, Drake 1
Drake had less luck in its Sunday bout against Minnesota. The Bulldogs were blanked doubles action against the Golden Gophers and managed just one point in the singles portion of play.

Shiori Takeda, was Drake's lone bright spot in the loss to Minnesota. She took down Sofia Pinto in come-from-behind fashion at the No. 3 position (6-7, 6-4, 10-6) to give the Bulldogs a point.

Outside of Takeda, Minnesota controlled Sunday's tilt. The Gophers won the first two doubles duels to take an early lead before picking up five singles wins in straight sets.

Drake is now 1-6 on the season and will continue its current homestand next weekend. The Bulldogs will welcome Chicago State on Feb. 20 before Saint Louis visits campus on Feb. 21.
