DES MOINES, Iowa — Drake men's tennis closed out its weekend homestand with a 4-0 victory over the Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday morning at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improved to 8-2 overall, while Saint Louis fell to 2-8.
Drake set the tone early by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Ulysse Verrando and Adan Tarquino delivered a 6-1 victory over Ducruet and Lefebure at No. 1 doubles. Alan Gonzalez and Benjamin Johnson followed with a 6-3 win against Lo Nardo and Ochoa at No. 2 to secure the point. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished with Drake leading 5-4.
"I thought we played well today in doubles," said Drake head coach Justin Stuckey. "We really did a great job doing the fundamentals. Saint Louis played well in singles and really fought the whole match. I thought we did very good as a team in the important moments."
The Bulldogs carried that momentum into singles play, earning three completed victories to clinch the match.
Gonzalez was first off the court at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ochoa. Arin Menon followed with a resilient 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory at No. 6 against Koshimizu. Benjamin Johnson secured the match at No. 3 singles, bouncing back from a first-set loss to defeat Townsend, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Three additional singles matches were left unfinished after Drake clinched the team victory. Christian Winstead was ahead 3-0 in the third set at No. 1, Samuel Melaga led 3-2 in the third at No. 4, and Jose Alessandro Hernandez held a 1-0 edge in the deciding set at No. 5.
Drake has now won eight consecutive matches and will return to action next weekend on the road against Xavier on Feb. 27 and Northern Kentucky on Feb. 28 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
