AMES, Iowa – Drake track and field returned to Ames for their third indoor meet hosted by the Cyclones this spring. The Bulldogs produced three victors on the track to highlight a handful of standout results on Friday.
Drake's distance crew highlights the Bulldogs' third trip to Ames this season with a trio of top finishers.
Kayci Martensen (3000m) and
Anastasia Kirillov (5000m) both earned first place finishes with times of 9:44.12 and 16:52.61, respectively.
Brenden Heitzig copied Kirillov in the men's 5000 with a winning time of 14:19.14.
Breanna Burak was just behind Kirillov in the women's 5000 with a pace of 17:23.69. Three more Bulldog men finished in the top six of the men's field including
Bowen Martin in third (14:36.92),
Daniel Rotich in fifth (14:48.47), and
Aidan Palmer in sixth (14:49.09).
Xander Kwa added another solid distance finish with a time of 8:22.00 in the men's 3000, good enough for fifth.
Carter Beasley continued his memorable rookie campaign with a fourth-place finish in the men's 800 in 1:49.75.
Gracie Federspiel added another middle-distance top six placement with a time of 1:30.73 in the women's 600.
Drake's track efforts were rounded out by a
Khalil Kaba sixth place finish (8.46) in the men's 60m hurdles and a fifth-place result in the men's 4x400 relay by the team of
Drake Dombrosky,
Carter Beasley,
Berkley Munnings, and
Drew Boyd.
Maud Visscher posted the best field event finish with a third-place mark of 14.47m/47-5 3/4 in the women's shot put.
Ethan Elliott earned his first of two sixth place finishes in the men's shot put with a throw of 16.51m/54-2, the other coming in the men's weight throw with a heave of 17.91m/58-9 1/4.
Chinemerem Iwuagwu also took sixth in the women's weight throw with a launch of 18.07m/59-3 1/2.
Sam Carpenter and
Adam Phillips competed in the men's weight throw invitational section at the Iowa State Classic. Carpenter took fourth (21.12m/69-3 1/2) while Phillips finished sixth (21.04m/69-1/2).
Drake will be off until they visit Iowa City for the Iowa Open on Feb. 20, the Bulldogs' final regular season indoor meet before the MVC Indoor Championships from Mar. 1-2.
