Bulldogs Shutout Beacons for Series Win

Drake picks up first conference series win of the year behind Scheck's complete game shutout

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake softball team won its first Missouri Valley Conference series of the season shutting out the Valparaiso Beacons, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon from Ron Buel Field. A strong pitching performance from Jayme Scheck along with early run support led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive win.

Drake did its damage early as it scored all three runs in the first two innings. The Bulldogs plated one run in the first taking advantage of an error by Valpo in the field.

Following a single by Ava Husak, Kiley Kindelspire raced around the bases going from first to third on the play, but the throw coming in from the outfield to try and cut her down at third got away and the freshman scurried home.

In the second, Drake cashed in with the bases loaded. Kindelspire was also at the center of the scoring as it was her base hit through the right side that brought in Emily Veschak and Lili Gonzalez who both got on base via walks.

Leading 3-0, that was all the Bulldogs needed behind the arm of Scheck. The fifth-year senior, coming off her victorious outing in game two of yesterday's doubleheader, went right back to work and stifled the Valpo offense from the circle. Scheck went the distance for her complete game shutout and allowed just three hits in the contest to go along with two strikeouts and one walk.

Scheck improved her record to 4-6 on the season and tallied her first complete game of the year. The win also marked the first time this season the Bulldogs had shutout an opponent.

Drake returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 21 for a road contest against the South Dakota Coyotes. First pitch from Vermillion is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
