DES MOINES, Iowa - The Bulldogs and the Racers concluded their regular season schedules on Saturday with a matinee matchup at Ron Buel Field. Another high-scoring affair in the series saw Murray State complete the three-game sweep of Drake after a 9-7 win.
The Bulldogs got off to a hot start with RBI singles from
Ava Husak and
Finley Hall to give them an early 2-0 lead with Drake chasing Murray State starter Raylee Roby after just 0.2 innings of work.
The Racers scored runs in each of the next five innings, however. One run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings made it 3-2. The Racers added three runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run home run from Adison Hicks to separate themselves away from the Bulldogs.
That marked the end of the day for Drake starter
Jayme Scheck, who pitched four innings, allowed five hits, six runs, four of them earned, and walked three batters while striking out one.
With the score reading 6-2, the Bulldogs started their comeback attempt. They got two back in the fifth off a Husak two-run shot. Husak finished the day with four RBIs.
Murray State went on to add three insurance runs in the sixth inning to make it 9-4, leaving the Bulldogs one last chance.
Husak started the last frame of the season with an RBI single down the line, followed by a
Pearson Hall RBI.
Finley Hall hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in
Haley Schroeder to make the score 9-7.
The Bulldogs had runners on first and second with two outs and
Ava Curry at the plate, representing the winning run. Racers pitcher Emily Siurek got Curry to swing and miss at the final pitch of the Bulldogs' season and secure the win for Murray State.
The Bulldogs' season comes to an end with a record of 13-38 and a 7-21 record in conference play.
