DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake men's tennis recently made an addition to its roster ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, the program announced today. Brazilian prep Matias Fernandez officially signed to become a Drake Bulldog.

"We are thrilled Matias will be joining us this coming fall season," Drake head coach Justin Stuckey said. "He plays with a lot of passion on the court but also equally impressive is just how committed he is to being a team player and helping to add to the competitive culture that we have. Look forward to seeing him here this coming fall."
 
Fernandez hails from Florianopolis in the state of Santa Catarina located in southern Brazil. In juniors play, he ranked first in his state and held the No. 1,310 spot on the overall Junior ITF rankings with a UTR of 11.85. During his prep career, Fernandez made five finals of J30 doubles tournaments and won the J30 when it was held in Foz do Iguacu.

"I chose Drake because the team has high-level tennis and the university provides great academic programs that will help me with my future post-college," Fernandez explained.
 
Matias is the son of Cesar and Priscila Fernandez and has one brother, Bruno, who is also a standout tennis player ranked No. 626 in singles.
