CORE COURSES

Prospective student-athletes are required to complete 16 core courses (listed in the box to the right). This 16 core course requirement remains unchanged.
Of these 16 core courses, 10 must be completed before the start of the prospective student-athlete’s seventh (7th) semester of high school. This means that once those ten courses are “locked-in” a prospective student-athlete cannot retake them to improve their grade point average (GPA).
Seven of the ten locked-in courses must be a combination of English, Math, or Natural or Physical Science that fulfills the requirements listed in the box to the right. If a prospective student-athlete does not earn the ten courses before his or her seventh semester of high school, he or she could still
be eligible to receive athletic aid and practice, but he or she would be unable to compete in his or her first year of enrollment.

NCAA Core Courses
English 4 years
Mathematics (Three years of math courses at the level of Algebra I or higher) 3 years
Natural or physical science (including at least one lab course if offered by the high school) 2 years
Additional courses in English, mathematics, or natural or physical science 1 year
Social Science 2 years
Additional academic courses [in any of the above areas or foreign language, philosophy, or nondoctrinal religion (e.g., comparative religion) courses) 4 years

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)
A prospective student-athlete must attain a minimum 2.300 GPA in the 16 NCAA core courses to be eligible to compete in his or her first year of college. A prospective student-athlete with a GPA below 2.300, but at or above 2.000 may still be eligible for athletic aid and practice in his or her first year of enrollment.

TEST SCORES
The NCAA uses a sliding scale for the core courses GPA and test scores (ACT or SAT) to determine academic eligibility.
  • ACT: Sum of best English, Math, Reading, and Science scores
  • SAT: Sum of best Critical Reading and Math scores; writing score is not used

Transfer Regulations
An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution's athletics interests shall not make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA or NAIA four-year collegiate institution, directly or indirectly, without first obtaining the written permission of the first institution's athletics director (or an athletics administrator designated by the athletics director).
Student-athletes transferring to Drake are expected to meet the minimum admission standards for all transfers and applicable NCAA rules for transfer students.
If admissible, the Office of Admission uses official transcript to determine transfer credits.  Transfer student-athletes are not eligible to compete and/or receive athletic aid until a FINAL evaluation of credit is received and all continuing eligibility standards are met.

Walk-on Policies

If you are interested joining one of the Drake athletics teams, you must contact the individual sport office in which you are interested.  Each team's walk-on process is different and the sport office can answer any questions you might have regarding that team's walk-on procedures.
