INDIANOLA, IOWA Paced by three runners finishing among the top five, the Drake women's cross country team won the team title in the Simpson Buxton Open Saturday morning.
The Bulldogs scored 28 points with host Simpson placing second with 29 followed by Grand View at 96. Iowa Central Community College failed to field a complete team.
With upcoming meets scheduled at Bradley and Penn State next week, Drake withheld its top six men and five of its top six women from the Simpson Buxton Open.
Sophomore
Nicole Braunsdorf (St. Francis, Wis.) led Drake by placing second in the 5,000-meter race in 20 minutes 21 seconds. Teammate
Amy Garrett was third in 20:44 followed by Drake freshman
Katie Phelan (Jackson, Mich.) who was fourth in 20:48.
Sophomore Cole Feldman (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper) placed fifth in the men's division which featured 37 runners. Feldman was timed in the 8,000-meter race in 28:34. Drake sophomore Andy Shortslef (Janesville, Wis.)was sixth in 28:47, while sophomore Randy Weigand (Wheaton, Ill.) was eighth in 29:14.

"There were some good teams racing today so it provided a great opportunity for our younger kids to gain some valuable experience that will pay off in the weeks and months ahead, " said Drake cross country coach
Dan Hostager.
"The course was pretty rough so they might not be happy with their times but I'm really proud of the way we competed today. Our workouts have been going very well so we're excited about heading into our championship phase."
