Year: Senior
Major: Secondary Education, working for business and coaching endorsements
Hometown: Des Moines, Iowa
Family: Two older brothers, Jonathan and K.P., and a younger brother, Kenny
Nicknames: Scoot, Scotty P., Big Daddy P., Asian Sensation,
Favorite athlete:
When I was growing up, my favorite athlete had to be Deion Sanders. He
was just a breakaway player. Anytime he touched the ball he was
dangerous, and he just had that playmaking ability that I enjoyed
watching.
Favorite teams: Dallas Cowboys and the Michigan Wolverines, “We started off slow, but we're going to win that Big 10 Championship this year.”
Favorite food: I like a mixture of things; anything that's spicy.
Favorite movie: Top Gun “I had my parents rent it every week. I grew up wanting to be a fighter pilot.”
Favorite music: “I like a variety of music, but I guess I'm more into the hip hop right now, and then on the other side I enjoy country, too.”
Hobbies: Beach volleyball in the summer, working out, spending time with my girlfriend, working for Iowa Sports Connection and at Hy-Vee
Best road trip: “My freshman year, we went to Morehead State
for the game, and we won the game, which was the best feeling in the
world. We had a charter, flew there, played the game, flew right back
and had a celebration. It was just a great time. I guess the best meal
on a road trip was Butler. A great steak dinner.
Why Drake:
Initially I didn't choose Drake. I went to the Air Force Academy Prep
School. I went there wanting to play football, wanting to go to the
academy, and I thought the armed forces were for me. My two older
brothers were in the Navy and the Army, and my Dad was from the Lao
Royal Army when they came over, so I have military running in my blood.
I thought I'd take the same route. I went there for four months,
decided that wasn't for me, and Drake was my second choice. I came to
Drake the spring of 2004. So I guess, once I left the Air Force
Academy, I chose Drake because I had a great recruiting experience from
Drake, and I thought it was a great place and a great opportunity to
represent and play in my hometown of Des Moines.
Best part about being on Drake's football team:
The guys. Before here, I experienced the guys at the Air Force Academy,
and they were nothing like the guys here. Everyone supports everyone
here. I can say that because I've been somewhere else; I know how
players here treat each other. ...great family atmosphere, everyone
gets along, everyone supports each other and everyone's main goal to
win the championship.
#1 goal for team this season:
To win the conference championship. That's always our goal. There's no
better feeling than winning the conference championship. I won it my
freshman year, and hopefully I can win it my senior year and go out
with a bang. Come in with a bang, go out with a bang.
If you could be any player on your team, who would you be and why?
I'd be one of my five offensive linemen. I want to feel how they feel
blocking for me. They've done a great job my past four years here, and
they do all the work and I get all the awards and honors. I wish I
could be one of them one day and just work hard and not take the credit
for anything.
Idea of a perfect date: If I tell you the
truth, I think my girlfriend might get mad at me, but oh well. My idea
of a perfect date is if the female of my perfect date would make me
breakfast, lunch and dinner and would allow me to watch football the
whole day. She'd like football, too. That'd be my perfect date, which
has never happened.
What did you do this summer?
Worked my two jobs, lifted, took a summer class at DMACC and spent time
with my girlfriend and my teammates. I also took a trip to Chicago, which was like my mini-vacation.
If someone were to make a movie about you, who would play the lead, what type of movie would it be and what's the title?
My teammates would recommend some martial arts person. I think they'd
recommend either Jackie Chan or Jet Li or something like that. The
title would be “Scotty the Crazy Asian.” That's not from me though,
that'd be from my teammates. Everyone would assume that it'd be a
martial arts film.
Most embarrassing moment: I guess last year during Jacksonville,
I got in the open field, I ran for 50 yards. Everyone thought I was
going to get a touchdown, but I got caught from behind. I guess that's
my most embarrassing moment. My teammates will never let it down from
the day it happened. We did win the game, and I ran for 200 yards
though.
Most rewarding moment: Earlier in my career, it had to be winning the conference championship, and now it has to be beating Illinois State. It was probably the biggest win of my career, of my whole life. Going into Illinois State, at their place, with them being no. 7 and a scholarship team, that was probably the best moment ever.
Most important locker room ritual:
My most important locker room ritual I guess is getting dressed the
same way every time. Don't rush anything, stay calm. Don't get too
intense, don't get too hyped up. I guess it's kind of like the calm
before the storm; you have to stay calm before you go out there and
play a game. Just stay relaxed.
Most inspirational person:
It can't be one person; it'd have to be my entire family. My parents,
if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't even be here. I'd probably still be
in Laos
right now, and I don't know what I'd be doing. They came here to give
us a better opportunity, so that's enough influence on me. They gave me
the determination I have right now. My older brothers, I always looked
up to them. They were the first ones. They did everything, and I had to
learn it all from them. They made my life better because they had to go
through all the hardships with my parents. Then my little brother
influenced me in many ways because I've had to adapt to him. He's
totally different from me, so he's helped me in many ways.
Words to live by: The
first one, which I have tattooed across my chest in Chinese characters,
is “determination.” All my life I've been told I couldn't do this, I
couldn't do that, so when I turned 18, my first tattoo I wanted to live
by was being determined. Also, hard-working. Everything I've done, I
have had to work for. I'm not the biggest guy in the world; I'm not the
most talented guy in the world. Everything I've done, I've worked hard
for. I don't regret anything I've done so far, so those are the words I
live by.
