PEORIA, ILL. -- In a final tuneup before competing in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Oct. 27, the Drake men's cross country team came away with a solid effort in the Bradley Classic at the Newman Golf Course Friday.
The Drake men's cross country team fell short in defending its team title by placing fourth out of 15 teams. But the Bulldogs were without the services of their top runner -- junior Jeff Grassmeyer (Fremont, Neb.), the reigning MVC Men's Runner of the Week who also is a two-time MVC individual champion in the 3,000 and 5,000 runs in track.
Missouri, placing five runners in the top 10, won the men's team title with 27 points while Drake tallied 172 points.
Senior Barry Hill (Caddo Hills, Texas) led Drake by placing 12th in the 8,000-meter race in 25 minutes 12 seconds. Junior Evan Jurkovich (Edina, Minn.) was 21st in 25:57, while junior Leyden Tolhurst (Auckland, New Zealand) was 25th in 25:33 and junior Andrew Shortslef (Janesville, Wis.) was 48th in 26:00.
