Drake Dominates All-Time MVC Track, Cross-Country Teams

ST. LOUIS, MO. - Twenty-seven former Drake standouts have been named to the All-Time Missouri Valley Conference Men's Track and Field Team, while the Bulldogs also landed 12 former distance runners on the All-Time MVC Men's Cross Country Team.

In addition, Bob Karnes and Bob Ehrhart were among 11 coaches honored as MVC All-Centennial Coaches.

Under Karnes, Drake won eight Missouri Valley Conference men's cross country titles (1958, 1960, 1962-64, 1966-68), five MVC men's outdoor track and field crowns (1963-65, 1968-69) and two MVC men's indoor track and field crowns (1968, 1969).

Ehrhart, who was inducted into the MVC Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, coached 77 MVC indoor track and field champions at Drake. He led Drake to the 1970 MVC men's cross country team title, while guiding the Bulldogs to six straight MVC men's indoor track and field crowns (1970-75) and the MVC men's outdoor track and field title in 1971.

The team was selected in conjunction with the Missouri Valley Conference celebrateing a century of excellence as the nation's second-oldest NCAA Division I conference. As a part of the Centennial Celebration, The Valley is naming all-centennial teams for each of the Valley's sponsored sports.

Team composition for each sport was determined through an on-line fan vote (www.mvc100.org) and by a centennial committee. Fans also designated all-time coaches as part of the on-line voting process. Track & Field holds the ultimate Centennial Celebration distinction as the very first athletic event ever contested in the Missouri Valley Conference, holding the first league championship in May of 1907. Iowa State claimed the initial team championship.

The all-time MVC men's track and field team selected athletes in seven categories: distance running; middle distance running; sprints; hurdles; jumps; throws; and multi-events.

Drake landed the most distance runners of any MVC school to the 19-man distance running corps by having nine runners recognized. Drake had eight athletes named to the 28-man sprint squad, while four performers were cited in jumps as well as hurdles.

Rick Wanamaker, who won the decathlon as a senior at the 1970 NCAA Outdoor Championships, was one of two athletes named in the multi-events.

Two-time NCAA All-American Linn Philson, who won the 1935 high jump at the 1935 NCAA Outdoor Championship, was named in the jumps. Philson won three straight MVC outdoor titles in the high jump from 1934-36. Others recognized were three-time MVC long jump champ Steve Cady (1973, 1974 MVC indoor; 1972 MVC outdoor); three-time MVC outdoor long jump titliist Marvin Gilliam (1961-63) and Lloyd Lansrud, an NCAA All-American in the pole vault (1930), who won or shared MVC outdoor titles in 1930 and 1931.

Nine-time MVC champion Kevin Little headed a contingent of eight former Drake athletes who were included in the sprint category. Joining Little were Jim Ford, who won the 220-yard dash in the 1952 NCAA Outdoor Championship; eight-time MVC champ Lansing Holman; three-time MVC champ Mike Jorgensen; former NCAA All-American Jim Lavery, who also competed in the 1952 Olympics; three-time MVC champion Don Pettie; and six-time MVC champ Skeet Spotser.

Little was a six-time medalist in the 200 at both the World Indoor and Outdoor Championships. He was an NCAA All-American in the 200 in 1989 and 1990. Little also won the 55-meter dash at the 1988 MVC Indoor Meet and the 200 three straight years (1988, 1989, 1990). He also won the 200 at the 1987, 1988 and 1990 MVC Outdoor meets, along with the 100 in 1988.

Former Drake distance runners named to the all-time MVC team were two-time MVC champion and former NCAA All-American Ray Dunn; five-time MVC champ and two-time NCAA All-American Elliott Evans; four-time MVC champ and two-time NCAA All-American Fred Feiler; two-time MVC champ and former NCAA All-American Pat Hansel; eight-time MVC champion Vern Iwancin; three-time NCAA All-American and MVC 10,000-meter record holder Jason Lehmkuhle; four-time MVC champion Chris Mares; two-time MVC champion Boyd Nansel; and four-time MVC champion Brent Slay.

Former Drake middle distance runners who were named to the team included four-time MVC indoor 1,000-yard run champ Bob Becker (1970-73); two-time MVC champ and 1985 NCAA All-American Sterling Martin; three-time MVC indoor 880-yard champ Dave Nauman (1970-72), along with three-time MVC champion and 1969 NCAA All-American Warren Whitted.

Dave Magrane, who won three straight MVC outdoor shot put titles (1962-64) also was named to the team.

Drake and Southern Illinois placed the most runners, at 12, on the MVC All-Time Men's Cross Country team. Evans, Feiler, Iwancin, Lehmkuhle, and Nansel also were named to the MVC All-Time Men's Cross Country team. Evans was a three-time All-MVC performer. Feiler won the individual title at the 1944 and 1945 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Iwancin won the MVC cross country title in 1980 and 1981. Lehmkuhle captured the 1999 MVC cross country title, while Nansel won the 1975 and 1976 MVC cross country title.

Bill Feiler, who was second in the 1938 NCAA Cross Country meet, also was named to the MVC Centennial Cross Country team, along with Bobby Anderson, Matt Gabrielson, Howard Johnston, Bill Mack, Lynn Lee and Mark Thomas.

Anderson won the 2004 MVC cross country title and was a three-time All-MVC performer.

Gabrielson was a three-time All-MVC performer, while Johnston won the 1947 MVC cross country title and was third at the 1944 NCAA Cross Country Championship. Mack was fourth in the 1946 NCAA Cross Country meet and 11th in the 1945 NCAA meet.

Lee won the 1969 and 1970 NCAA Cross Country title, while Thomas was a four-time All-MVC performer from 1973-76.

In the MVC's first 99 seasons, 32 members combined for 28 national championships, while 55 Valley student-athletes captured NCAA individual titles. In addition, Valley student-athletes and coaches earned 49 National Player or Coach of the Year honors in their respective sports. And the league had a myriad of student-athletes who collected All-America honors and earned national academic distinction in The Valley's first century.

Track & Field/Cross Country (sponsored 1907 to present): Thirty-one programs have sponsored track & field in conference history. Drake is the longest-tenured member, completing its 95th season in 2006-07.
