Basten Finishes 12th at NCAA Championship To Earn All-America Honors

Sophomore wraps up tremendous season with a breakout week at the NCAA Championship

Drake University sophomore Isaac Basten became the first Bulldog to earn All-America honors in the 1,500 meters with a 12th place finish Friday evening at the NCAA Track & Field Championship.

His All-America honor is the 31st by a Bulldog at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and just the third in the last two decades.

Basten advanced to Friday's final after a heroic effort in Wednesday's qualifying heat that featured a personal best of 3:39.57 as he moved up five spots in the last lap. However, against the windy conditions and the nation's best, Basten could not hold that pace, finishing in 3:46.12.

Oregon freshman Cole Hocker won the event in 3:35.35, the second-fastest time ever at the NCAA Championship. Defending champion, Yared Nuguse of Notre Dame, finished second in 3:35.60.

The event caps a tremendous season for Basten in which he shaved eight seconds off his time in the 1,500 meters to record the second-fastest time in school history.

Basten was one of three Bulldogs competing this week at the NCAA Championship. On Wednesday, Adam Fogg finished 16th in the preliminary heats of the 1,500 meters to also earn All-America honors, while Adam Kessler was 17th in the shot put.
