ST. LOUIS, MO. ? The Missouri Valley Conference announced Tuesday (Sept. 4) that Drake freshman
Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa/East) has been selected as the State Farm/MVC Volleyball Freshman of the Week.
Sims turned in a stellar week in her first four collegiate matches averaging 3.12 kills, 0.88 blocks, 0.25 service aces and 0.25 digs per game, while registering a team-best .316 attack mark.
In her collegiate debut versus UMKC (Aug. 28), she posted 13 kills while committing only one error en route to a .387 hitting percentage. She finished with one solo block and five assists versus the Kangaroos.
She opened the Hampton Inn Invitational against Green Bay on Friday (Aug. 31) with 10 kills versus Green Bay (Aug. 31). Against Furman, she pounded out 15 kills against only four errors to register a .324 hitting percentage. She led the Bulldogs with a pair of solo blocks and chipped in two block assists.
Rounding out her week, she notched a team-high 12 kills with a .296 attack mark and three block assists against Florida Atlantic. Her efforts were rewarded as she was named to the Hampton Inn Invitational all-tournament team.
The Bulldogs (2-2) return to action this Friday (Sept. 7), hosting the Hampton Inn State of Iowa Collegiate Volleyball Challenge. Participating teams include; in-state rivals Iowa and Iowa State as well as No. 21 Louisiana State. Drake opens tournament action versus the Hawkeyes on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7:30 p.m.
