DES MOINES, IOWA ? The Drake women's soccer team battled Nebraska to a 1-1 double overtime tie Wednesday night at Drake Stadium. The Bulldogs out shot the Huskers, 19-10, in the contest, holding Nebraska to only two shots in the overtime periods.
Senior
Julie Hickman (Littleton, Colo.) scored the tying goal for the Bulldogs when she beat goalkeeper Jessica Mills to the top shelf.
“I continue to be impressed with the effort, mentality and even the soccer that our team is playing,” said Drake head coach
Corbin Stone. “So far we have played two Big Ten teams and two Big 12 teams, and lost only one match. I think that says volumes about the quality and potential of our team.”
Nebraska's Shay Powell broke the 56-minute scoreless stalemate when she recorded a goal off a header that Drake defender
Katie Sauer (Scottsdale, Ariz.) sent over Bulldogs goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) and right into Powell's grasp and an empty net.
“I told the team after the game that I wish I could say I am disappointed with the result, given the fact that for long stretches we dominated play. But there is no way that I can feel that way about our team for this game. That is because they played with tremendous heart, moxie and resilience,” commented Stone.
Nebraska competed a player down through the last 31 minutes after Anna White received her second yellow card of the night.
Schroeder made six saves in goal for the Bulldogs. Jessica Mills also made six saves in goal for Nebraska.
“As our form in front of the goal continues to improve we won't be in these situations where we are facing draws much longer,” said Stone.
Drake sophomore
Melissa Lewis (Edina, Minn.) led the Bulldogs with four shots. Ten different Drake players took shots in the contest.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday in Chicago, Ill. at 1 p.m. facing DePaul.
“Tomorrow we have to get on the road and play DePaul on Friday, it will be a challenge, however I am excited to see them get back on the field. They play like they have something to prove and I like that,” concluded Stone.
