FALCON HEIGHTS, MINN. -- Junior Nicole Braunsdorf (St. Francis, Wis.) placed ninth to help lead the Drake women's cross country team to a third-place finish in the Oz Memorial Run at Saturday morning at the Les Bolstad Cross Country Course.

Nationally ranked Minnesota won the meet with 15 points followed by South Dakota State with 75, Drake 88, North Dakota State 93 and Minnesota State-Mankato with 105.

The Oz Memorial is named after Gary Osborn, the longtime Drake women's track and field and cross country coach who died in 2000. Members of the Osborn family were in attendance Saturday.

Braunsdorf was timed in 23 minutes 26 seconds on the 6,000-meter course.

Four of Drake's top six runners were freshmen led by Casey McDermott (Newton, Iowa) who was 11th in 24:02.

"It was a great team performance," said cross country coach Dan Hostager. "Over half our girls had never run 6,000 meters. It also was a good experience to run against nationally ranked team like Minnsota.

Drake sophomore Courtney Heinz (St. Paul, Minn.) was 20th in 25:00 followed by freshman Katrine Owren (Sandes, Norway) 22nd, 25:02; freshman Amelia Clark (Jakarta, Indonesia), 26th, 25:08; and freshman Meredith Bell (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), 28th, 25:21.

Junior Laura Zoulek (Butler, Wis.) was 31st in 25:30.

Drake will return to action Sept. 22 competing at the Missouri State Invitational.
