Emmenecker's Buzzer Beater Lifts Men's Basketball Team To 14th Straight Win

PEORIA, ILL. ? Adam Emmenecker's rebound basket just before the buzzer sounded lifted Drake to a come-from-behind 69-68 Missouri Valley Conference victory past Bradley Wednesday night.

Drake extended its school record winning streak to 14 games, while improving its record to 15-1 which is the best start in school history.

This marked the first time since the 1969-70 season that Drake has opened the MVC campaign with a 6-0 record. The 1969-70 team enjoyed a 9-0 league start en route to winning the MVC title with a 14-2 mark.

A three-point basket from the right wing by freshman Sam Maniscaico with 10.7 seconds left had given Bradley a 68-67 lead.

Following two time outs, Emmenecker penetrated the key but missed two shots before grabbing the rebound and hitting the winning shot from four feet inside the left paint while falling down.

With 1:27 left Emmenecker made a layup and a free throw to tie the game at 65-65.

Then Jonathan Cox stole a pass and fed to Leonard Houston for a layup to give Drake a 67-65 edge with 1:06 left.

Drake had trailed 61-54 with 3:46 left before mounting its comeback.

A three-point basket by Klayton Korver from the right baseline pulled Drake within 61-57. Following a traveling violation by Bradley, Leonard Houston made a layup to pull the Bulldogs to within 61-59.

Houston made a free throw with 2:38 left to pull Drake within 61-60. But two free throws by Jeremy Crouch gave Bradley a 63-60 edge with 2:33 remaining.

Houston made a free throw to pull Drake within 63-61 with 2:13 left.

Houston led Drake with 19 points including 15 in the second half.

Emmenecker and Cox added 12 points apiece for Drake.

The Bulldogs played their second straight game without the services of sophomore guard Josh Young who leads the MVC in scoring with a 16.3 average.

Drake snapped a three-game losing skid to Bradley, while earning its first victory in Peoria, Ill., since a 79-69 triumph, Feb. 28, 2005.

This marked the first time since the 2001-02 season that Drake has won three straight MVC games on the road.

Drake also won its fifth road game of the season - the most since the 1995-96 team won five games on the road.

The 15 wins by coach Keno Davis are the third most by any first-year coach at Drake trailing only 18 wins that Forrdy Anderson earned in the 1946-47 season and 19 victories by Bob Ortegel in the 1974-75 campaign.

Drake started off the game sluggishly by committing five turnovers in its first eight possessions.

Drake made just one of six shots in the last 6:52 of the first half and the Braves took advantage.

The Bulldogs saw a 24-16 advantage evaporate as Bradley went on a 13-3 run to close out first half en route to a 29-27 lead.

Trailing 8-3, the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run, aided by four points from Houston to grab a 13-10 advantage.

After a three-point basket by Andrew Warren gave Bradley a 16-15 lead, Drake reeled off nine straight points to enjoy its biggest lead of the first half at 24-16.

Junior reserve John Michael Hall scored four points to ignite the surge, while Cox capped it off with a dunk off a lob pass from Houston with 6:53 left.

Drake outrebounded Bradley, 34-27, with Korver, Cox and Houston grabbing seven boards apiece.
