Men's Cross Country Team Third At Bradley Classic

PEORIA, ILL. - In a final tuneup before competing in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Nov. 1, the Drake men's cross country team placed third in the 12-team Bradley Classic Friday at the Newman Golf Course.

Senior Leyden Tolhurst (Auckland, New Zealand) led Drake with a seventh-place finish in the 8,000-meter race in 25 minutes 30 seconds.

One-hundred and thirteen runners competed in the meet.

Drake tallied 112 points recording the highest finish of any MVC team to place ahead of Northern Iowa (eighth), Illinois State (tenth) and Bradley (12th) as well as defending team champion Missouri (seventh).

Despite the team's high finish, Drake coach Dan Hostager said there was room for improvement entering the MVC Championships.

"We had good efforts from the guys, but we didn't get the result we wanted. We're looking forward to getting the guys rested for the MVC meet. We fought through some things in the middle of the race and it showed."

Drake freshman Colin Hagan (Wichita, Kan.) finished 15th in 25:43, while freshman Derek Campbell (Sycamore, Ill.) was 23rd in 25:56.
