Young's Heroics Lift Men's Basketball Team To Third Straight Victory

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Josh Young's 10-foot pull-up jumper in the paint with 3.1 seconds remaining lifted the Drake men's basketball team to a come-from-behind 59-57 victory past Texas-Pan American in the opening round of the Iowa Realty Invitational Friday night.

Young's heroics capped a comeback that saw the Bulldogs rally from a 56-49 deficit with 3:54 left in the game.

"I'm glad Josh Young is on our team," said an elated Drake basketball coach Mark Phelps. "It's no secret that he has been struggling in recent games. But like all terrific players when it came down to his team really needing him, he showed up in a tremendous way."

The Bulldogs, who won their third straight game, pushed their record to 5-2 entering a 3 p.m. Saturday tip off against North Carolina Central.

Drake held Texas-Pan American without a basket for the last 4:26 as the Broncs missed their last five shots of the game.

Sophomore guard Josh Parker (Harvey, Ill.) came off the bench to lead Drake with 18 points, including 10 in the second half, to help spark the rally.

Parker drove the right baseline making a layup with 3:42 left to pull Drake within 56-51.  He added a free throw with 2:28 remaining to push the Bulldogs within 57-52.

Young, who was held to just one basket in the game's opening 38 minutes, then made a three-point basket from the left wing with 1:22 left moving Drake within 57-55.

After Texas-Pan American missed a shot, Drake guard Craig Stanley (Plano, Texas) took the lob pass from Jonathan Cox (Barrington, Ill.) and penetrated the paint for a layup to knot the score at  57-57 with 1:00 left.

On the Broncs' ensuing possession, guard Nick Weiermiller missed a shot from the right wing and teammate Emmanuel Jones missed a tip in.

Cox collected the rebound and Drake took two consecutive time outs with 24.6 seconds left to set up the winning shot by Young.

Trailing 24-19, Drake went on a 12-4 binge to close out the first half with Parker leading the surge with eight points.

Parker continued his torrid three-point shooting at home by making four of six shots. He is hitting 52.3 percent from beyond the arc in five home games, making 11 of 21 shots.

Stanley finished with 10 points, making four of five shots.

Cox added nine points along with eight rebounds. He moved into 12th place on the Drake career rebounding list at 595, surpassing McCoy McLemore (1962-64, 587) and Dolph Pulliam (1966-69, 593).

Drake outrebounded Texas-Pan American, 26-23.

The Bulldogs shot 51.2 percent from the floor, drilling 22 of 43 shots, including nine three-point baskets.

Guard Ben Smith scored a game-high 21 points, coming on seven three-point baskets. He had made a total of eight treys in seven contests entering the game.

The Broncs slipped to 2-8 and will face North Carolina Central at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Drake Knapp Center.
