NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Drake senior guard
Adam Emmenecker, who earlier was named the Larry Bird Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, has been named to the honorable mention Associated Press All-America men's basketball team.
The Saginaw, Mich., native was the catalyst of Drake's nationally ranked team which posted a school-record 28-5 mark while advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The former walk-on helped lead a team, picked to finish ninth in the preseason league poll, to its first Missouri Valley Conference title since 1971, its first ever Missouri Valley Conference post-season tournament championship, while also advancing to NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1971.
Earlier Emmenecker was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Men's Basketball Player of Year in the University Division as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He also was named the Missouri Valley Conference Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Emmenecker was named the outstanding player of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament after leading Drake to its first tournament title ever, posting unique back-to-back double-doubles in the semifinal round and championship game. He had 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in Creighton March 8, followed by a career-high 20 points and 11 assists in a 79-49 victory past Illinois state in the championship game March 9.
Emmenecker, who was named captain of the MVC Most Improved Team, earlier was named to the All-District VI team by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Emmenecker set a Drake single-season school record with 213 assists, including a career-high 14 in his college finale against Western Kentucky which still stands as a 2008 NCAA Tournament single-game high.
Besides leading the league in assists (6.5 avg.), he ranked third in the Missouri Valley Conference in steals with 53 (1.6 avg.) and seventh in free throw percentage (.833).
Emmenecker owned the highest rebounding average (4.6 avg.) of any point guard in the MVC, with that figure also ranking higher than the average of six starting post players in the league.
He more than tripled his combined career scoring total (57 points to 283) and assists (54 to 213) entering the season, while more than doubling his combined career totals in rebounding (60 to 157).
