DES MOINES, IOWA - Drake senior Nicole Braunsdorf (St. Francis, Wis.) defended her individual title at the Bulldog Classic cross country meet Friday at Ewing Park.

Braunsdorf covered the 4,000-meter course in 14 minutes 31 seconds.

"I felt good," said Braunsdorf. "My mileage is higher than last summer. I have a good base to build on for a better season."

Drake sophomore teammate Casey McDermott (Newton, Iowa) placed second in 15:21, while Meredith Bell of Drake was third in 15:50.

Five of the top seven runners in the meet were from Drake, including sophomore Milly Clark (Jakarta, Indonesia) who was sixth in 16:05 and freshman Elizabeth Dunn (Harvard, Mass.) who was seventh in 16:08.

"We have a lot of good veterans back," added Braunsdorf. "A lot of people have stepped up. I'm anxious to see runners like Casey (McDermott) develop."

"This was a good home opener," said Drake coach Dan Hostager. "It served as a gauge of where we are. We have a great attitude on the team and I'm looking forward to the season."
