COLUMBIA, MO. - The Drake
women's tennis team got its fall campaign off to a solid start registering a
6-6 combined singles/doubles mark in opening-round action at the Missouri
Invitational on Friday (Sept. 12).
Moving on in the top singles draw was senior Veronika Leszayova (Povazska Bystrica,
Republic/Gymnazium), who earned a default victory over Emily Lindsay of UMKC.
Freshman Amanda
Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) advanced in
the “B” singles draw with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Holly Davis of UMKC. Accounting for Drake's remaining singles
triumphs were freshman Earlynn Lauer
(Wichita, Kan./Goddard)
and senior Sarah Plowman (Halifax, Nova
Scotia/Halifax Grammar) in the “C” singles bracket. Lauer downed Megan Titus of UMKC, 6-0, 6-2,
while Plowman posted a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Caitlin Burke of UMKC.
In doubles, the Bulldogs' top duo of Leszayova and Plowman
netted an 8-4 victory over Joe Becker and Hailee Elmore of Saint Louis. Rounding out the win total was the tandem of
freshmen Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George School) and Morgan Rainey (Kansas City, Mo./Barstow
School), who bettered Carmen Peters and Franziska Steinhardt of Illinois State,
8-2.
Aguilera and senior Kari
Sloboth (Omaha, Neb./Burke) received byes in the singles
draw and will commence action on Saturday (Sept. 13).
