DRAKE'S GRASSMEYER SECOND AT OZ MEMORIAL
FALCON HEIGHTS, MINN. ? Drake senior Jeff Grassmeyer (Fremont, Neb.) finished second in the Oz Memorial cross country meet Saturday morning.
Grassmeyer, who was the meet's defending champion, covered the 6,000-meter course in 19 minutes 26 seconds. Drake freshman Colin Hagan (Wichita, Kan.) was fifth in 19:52.
North Dakota State senior James Schanandore won the race in 19:18.
Drake junior Zach Bales-Henry (Des Moines Iowa) was 12th in 20:09 followed by freshman Derek Campbell (Sycamore, Ill.) 14th in 20:19 and sophomore Brandon Lewis (Plymouth, Minn.) 17th in 20:36.
"This was a good challenge for us," said Drake coach Dan Hostager. "We were missing quite a few guys who were sick. The guys who did run competed well.
"We want to do better as a team so we're looking forward to getting everyone back next week and improving.
The Oz Memorial is named after Gary Osborn, the longtime Drake women's track and field and cross country coach who died in 2000. Osborn was a longtime friend of Minnesota coach Gary Wilson.
Drake will compete at the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa, next Saturday (Sept. 20).
