Defense, Rebounding Power Men's Basketball Team To Impressive Win At Creighton

OMAHA, NEB. --  Swingman John Michael Hall (Moultrie, Ga.) and guards Craig Stanley (Plano, Texas) and Josh Young  (Lawton, Okla.) combined for 29 points in the second half, to help rally the Drake men's basketball team to a 74-62 Missouri Valley Conference victory at preseason league favorite Creighton Saturday before a crowd of 17,193 at the Omaha Qwest Center.

The Bulldogs, who snapped a three-game losing streak, erased a six-point deficit (43-37) behind the hot shooting of the trio.

Young scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half.

Hall finished with a career-high 15 points, including nine in the second half. He entered the game having scored 10 points in his previous three games combined.

Stanley, a 6-foot 1-inch junior point guard, recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He scored nine points in the second half.

"We played with great poise," said Drake head coach Mark Phelps whose team improved to 14-7 entering a Wednesday home game with Evansville. "We played hard at both ends of the court. Defense and rebounding were the keys to winning today.

"We hung in and battled back after getting down early. We know we hadn't been playing good basketball the last couple of games. It was good to get back to playing Drake basketball the way we are supposed to play."

Drake held Creighton to a season-low 30 percent shooting from the floor, including a paltry 22.5 percent in the second half (9-40).

That marked the second time in Drake's last three road games that it has held an opponent to a season low in field goal shooting on its own home court after limiting Illinois State to a season low 36.2 percent shooting Jan. 14.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs fired at a 56.7 percent clip in the second half, making 17 of 30 shots.

Drake used an 11-4 run to grab the lead for good at 48-47 following a left-hand reverse layup by senior reserve forward Alex White (Albuquerque, N.M.) with 11:50 remaining.

Hall had five points in the surge, while Stanley scored four points including a rebound basket.

Clinging to a 50-49 lead, Young scored five straight points to ignite an 8-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 58-49 lead following a three-point basket by junior Adam Templeton (Rapid City, S.D.) with 8:07 left.

Two free throws by Stanley gave Drake its biggest lead of the game at 69-55 with 2:10 remaining.

Senior forward Jonathan Cox (Barrington, Ill.), the leading rebounder in the MVC, collected a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. It was his sixth double-double of the season and 23rd of his career.

It also marked the second straight game in which Cox grabbed 13 rebounds.

"We never lost confidence in ourselves during this recent skid," said Cox.

It marked the first time Drake has beaten Creighton four straight times since winning seven straight from 1992-96.

Drake collected a season high 48 rebounds, toppling its previous high of 44 against North Carolina Central.

The Bulldogs snapped a six-game streak in which it had been outrebounded. It marked the first time the Bulldogs had outrebounded an opponent (48-35) since outrebounding Missouri State (35-30) on New Year's Eve.
