Josh Young made two free throws with 4.4 seconds left to lift Drake to a 77-76 victory past Binghamton and the championship in the Drake Invitational Saturday night.
Binghamton closed out the game, making 10 of its last 12 shots including eight three-point baskets, to rally from a 12-point deficit in the second half.
Junior guard Chretien Lukusa fueled the Bearcats' comeback with 10 points, making three straight three-point baskets.
Dylan Talley's three-point basket from the left wing with 9.2 seconds gave Binghamton a 76-75 lead.
Drake called time out before Young penetrated and was fouled by Umur Peten. After Young's free throws, Binghamton had a chance to win the game but a 10-foot running jumper by Greer Wright fell short.
Freshman center
Seth VanDeest led Drake with a career-high 21 points, including 13 in the second half.
VanDeest hit nine of 11 shots from the floor, while scoring six of Drake's last 10 points.
A three-point basket by Lukusa gave Binghamton its biggest lead of the game at 72-69 with 3:20 left. A layup by Drake's
Craig Stanley cut the deficit to 72-71.
VanDeest made two free throws to give the Bulldogs a 73-72 edge with 2:19 left. Binghamton tied the game at 73-73 on a free throw by Kyrie Sutton.
Young and senior forward
Adam Templeton collected 16 points apiece for the Bulldogs who earned their third straight victory while evening their record to 5-5.
Drake shot 53.1 percent from the floor, making 26 of 49 shots, including 56.5 percent in the second half.
Drake took advantage of a 6:34 scoring drought by Binghamton to enjoy its biggest lead of the game at 30-15 following a free throw by freshman reserve forward
Aaron Hawley.
Templeton, who achieved his second career double-double Friday against South Dakota, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Young added five rebounds and four assists. Stanley came off the bench to also dish out four assists.
Binghamton made a season-high 12 three-point baskets, while shooting 50.9 percent from the floor.
