Hawley, Young Propel Men's Basketball Team Past North Dakota

DES MOINES, IOWA --  Senior guard Josh Young scored a season-high 17 points, while freshman forward Aaron Hawley came off the bench to tie a career high with 16 points, as Drake held off North Dakota, 72-63, in the consolation game of the second annual Drake Hy-Vee Classic Saturday night at the Drake Knapp Center.

Young, who scored just six points in Friday's opening round, had 10 points in the opening eight minutes to stake Drake to a 16-5 lead following a three-point play.

Two free throws by Young with 15:37 left gave Drake its biggest lead of the game at 49-29.

But the Bulldogs encountered an eight minute 50 second drought without a basket before Young drilled a three-point basket from the left baseline to push Drake's lead to 54-41 with 9:03 left.

Young (13) and Hawley (10) combined for 23 points in helping Drake own a 37-27 intermission lead.

Hawley led Drake with a career-high seven rebounds.

Young and freshman center Seth VanDeest were named to the Drake Hy-Vee Classic All-Tournament team.

VanDeest, who scored a career-high 15 points in Friday's game against SIU Edwardsville, had eight points and six rebounds against North Dakota.

Junior guard Ryan Wedel added nine points, four rebounds and three assists for Drake which improved to 3-5.

While Drake struggled from the field, the Bulldogs shot a sizzling 82.9 percent from the free throw line making 29 of 35 shots which was a contrast from shooting a season-low 54.5 percent against SIU Edwardsville.

The Bulldogs snapped a four-game home losing streak dating back to last year.

Freshman forward Ben Simons dished out a career-high five assists for Drake.

Forward Travis Mertens, who was named to the all-tournament team, paced North Dakota with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Patrick Mitchell added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Fighting Sioux who fell to 1-8.

A three-point basket by Mitchell pulled North Dakota within 69-63 with 33 seconds left. But Wedel hit three free throws to seal the victory.
