Basketball Comeback in Idaho Falls Short

MOSCOW, IDAHO  --  Josh Young (Lawton, Okla.) missed a three-point basket from the left wing at the buzzer allowing Idaho to escape with a 69-67 victory over Drake in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament Wednesday night.

Drake's Craig Stanley (Plano, Texas)  was intentionally fouled by Idaho's  Mac Hopson with 1.5 seconds left. Stanley missed the first shot, but made the second attempt.

Drake got the ball after Stanley's made free throw. Stanley inbounded the ball at midcourt to Young who missed a three-point attempt before the buzzer sounded.

"We had a nice play set up for the last second shot," said Young who scored a game-high 18 points. "I thought the shot might have a chance but it rolled away."

The setback thwarted a courageous comeback by Drake which trailed 67-55 before holding the host Vandals without a basket for the last three minutes 18 seconds of the game.

Drake actually had an opportunity to win the game before Young's missed shot.

Clinging to a 67-66 lead, Idaho's Trevor Morris missed a three-point shot from the left of the key with 15 seconds left.

Drake called a time out. Stanley received a pass from guard Josh Parker (Harvey, Ill.) and penetrated to the right of the paint but had a layup rim out with 4.3 seconds left.

Morris grabbed the rebound and was fouled, making two free throws to push Idaho's lead at 69-66.

"I was really proud of our team, given the circumstances playing in a hostile environment," said Drake head coach Mark Phelps. "You just wish our players could have been rewarded for their effort.

"We were at the rim for a go-ahead basket but unfortunately it didn't go down. Craig (Stanley) played a terrific game. He would make that shot 99 out of 100 times.

"Despite that, we were able to get another opportunity to win the game getting a decent look for Josh (Young.)."

"What a game," said Idaho coach Don  Verlin. "What a great game. Lots of runs. Lots of transition baskets. I thought we played one of our best games of the year from an offensive standpoint."

Forward Jonathan Cox (Barrington, Ill.)  who was one of five seniors playing in his final game for Drake,  enjoyed his Missouri Valley Conference leading eighth double-double of the season scoring 17 points, while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs made only one basket during a nine minute 25 second stretch late in the second half which allowed Idaho to grab a double-digit lead.

After a three-point basket by Cox pulled Drake within 50-49 with 10:28 left, the Bulldogs went cold from the floor, allowing Idaho to expand its lead to 67-55.

The Bulldogs then hit six straight free throws, including four by Young to pull within six at 67-61.

A layup by Stanley with 1:01 left ended Drake's dry spell without a basket, moving the Bulldogs within  four at 67-63.

Idaho threw the inbounds pass out of bounds and Drake took advantage with Parker drilling a three-point basket from the right wing with 50.9 left.

Parker finished with 12 points, including nine in the second half.

Drake shot 35.6 percent from the floor, including 31 percent in the second half.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 10 treys including four by Cox and three by Parker.

Drake outrebouned Idaho, 38-29, outscoring the Vandals, 12-3 on second-chance points.

Junior forward Adam Templeton (Rapid City, S.D.) grabbed seven rebounds for Drake.

Idaho owned a 32-31 lead in the first half which saw nine lead changes.

The Bulldogs showed signs of a 13-day layoff by making just two of their first eight shots to open the game.

But Drake rode the torrid shooting of Young to erect a 15-8 lead.

Young, who made just one of nine shots from the floor in Drake's last outing in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis March 5, scored seven straight points in a one minute 45 second span.

After a three-point basket from the right baseline by Cox  off an offensive rebound gave Drake a 22-21 lead, Idaho reeled off eight straight points to grab its biggest lead of the first half at 29-22.

Young had a game-high 14 points in the first half, while becoming the 16th player in Drake history to score more than 500 points in a season. Young also moved into a tie for No. 7 on the school career scoring charts with Luke McDonald (2000-03) at 1,328 points.

Cox closed out his career ranking 13th on the Drake  scoring list at 1,205 points and second on the career rebounding charts at 817.

"Bucky (Cox) played a terrific game," Phelps added. "He continued to demonstrate that he is one of the top players for his size in the country."
