Former Basketball Standout McLemore Dies

HOUSTON, TEXAS -- Former Drake men's basketball standout McCoy McLemore died Wednesday at the age of 67 from complications of cancer.

McLemore had an eight-year career in the NBA, making the NBA All-Rookie team in 1965. He also was a member of 1971 Milwaukee Bucks which won the NBA championship.

He helped lead the Bulldogs to their first-ever post-season appearance in 1964 with the team advancing to the second round of the NIT.

The 6-foot 7-inch McLemore led the Bulldogs in both scoring and rebounding in 1962-63 (13.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg) and 1963-64 (15.0 ppg, 11.8 rpg).

McLemore came to Drake after spending two seasons at Moberly (Mo.) Junior College where he had broken the scoring and rebounding records of Drake great Red Murrell.

He paced the 1963-64 Drake team to a 21-7 record, best to that date, and led the team to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament in Madison Square Garden. During the 1963-64 campaign, Drake beat Iowa State twice, and earned victories against Georgetown, Purdue and Cincinnati.

He received the prestigious Drake Double D Award in 1985.

In conjunction with Drake's celebrating its 100th year of intercollegiate basketball during the 2005-06 season, McLemore was selected to the school's All-Decade team from 1960-69.

McLemore played with the San Francisco Warriors from 1964-66, the Chicago Bulls from 1966-68, Phoenix 1968-69, Detroit 1968-70, Milwaukee 1970-71 1971-72, Cleveland 1970-71, and Houston in 1971-72.

McLemore received a 1971 Army award for entertaining U.S. troops in Vietnam with his singing talents. He also did motivational work for the Bill Glass Evangelistic Association in over 200 prisons for 12 years.
