Torrid Shooting Lifts Men's Basketball Team To Second Straight Victory

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Drake shot a season-high 60 percent from the floor, while matching a season high with 14 three-point baskets, to post its second straight Missouri Valley Conference victory with an 88-77 decision past Missouri State Tuesday night.

Missouri State, which entered the game leading the MVC in three-point field goal percentage (.397), shot a season low 6.3 percent from beyond the arc, making just one of 16 shots.

Meanwhile, eight different players made three-point baskets for Drake which leads the MVC in that category.  The Bulldogs shot a sizzling 63.6 percent beyond the arc, hitting 14 of 22 shots which ranks seventh on the school single-season list.

Senior forward Adam Templeton paced a balanced Drake effort with 16 points, including 11 in the second half. He made five of eight shots from the floor.

Guards Ryan Wedel and Josh Young added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Templeton, Wedel and Young made three three-point baskets apiece.

Drake displayed its best first half of basketball of the season with torrid shooting, crisp passing and a stingy defense to construct a 51-29 lead.

Drake, which shot 67.7 percent (21-31) in the first half, had a 15-to-2 assist to turnover ratio and finished the game with a season-high 21 assists.

The Bulldogs made 13 straight shots from the floor during a 9 minute 38 second stretch en route to constructing a 32-10 advantage following a jumper by freshman reserve forward Aaron Hawley.

Seven different players scored during the shooting spree with Young scoring eight points, including two three-point baskets.

Hawley and senior forward Bill Eaddy each scored six points for the Bulldogs who were shooting at a 92.8 percent clip from the floor in the game's opening 11 minutes 46 seconds.

A layup by Wedel gave Drake its biggest lead of the game at 41-16 with 4:35 left in the first half.

"You couldn't ask for an thing better than that in the first half," said Drake coach Mark Phelps, whose team improved to 7-11, including a 2-4 league mark. "We took care of the basketball. Our players stepped up. We would like to build some momentum on this victory."

"I thought we executed our offense well and got a lot of open looks," added Wedel. "We have confidence in our shooting ability."

Missouri State's top three scorers -- Kyle Weems, Adam Leonard, Jemaine Mallett -- were a combined two-of-15 shooting from the floor in the first half.

Reserves Keith Pickens and Nafis Ricks led Missouri State with 17 points apiece.

The Bears fell to 13-4, including a 3-3 conference record.

Drake opened the second half, making just three of its first 10 shots from the floor, which allowed Missouri State to pull within 62-54 with 10:11 left following a layup by Adam Leonard.

Eaddy, who tied a season high with nine points, hit a three-point basket to giving Drake a 69-57 lead.

The Bears pulled within 71-64 after a jumper by Weems. But Drake responded with three straight baskets from Templeton, Young and Craig Stanley to forge ahead, 80-68.

Drake sealed the victory by making eight of its last 10 free throws.

Freshman center Seth VanDeest added 12 points to Drake's attack, while sharing the team lead in rebounding with Templeton at five boards.

Young tied a career high with seven assists, while Stanley matched his season high with six assists.

DRAKE NOTES: The 25-point lead (41-16) was Drake's largest advantage of season with the previous largest lead being 20 points (49-29) in second half against North Dakota...The 51 points scored by Drake were the most this season, surpassing the previous high of 50 (50-39 lead) vs South Dakota...The 51 points scored by Drake were most allowed to an opponent by Missouri State this season...The 15 first-half assists surpassed Drake's entire single game output in last seven games...The eight three-point baskets by Drake in the first half surpassed its entire single game output in three of last four games (7 vs. Southern Illinois, 5 vs. Indiana State, 2 vs. Wichita State).
