Balanced Attack Keys Drake To Fourth Straight Victory

EVANSVILLE, IND. -  Senior guard Josh Young scored 18 points, including eight in the last four-minutes 15-seconds, as Drake held off Evansville, 72-65, to post its fourth straight Missouri Valley Conference victory Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs survived a 6:57 drought without a basket, to improve to 9-11 while moving into a share of fourth place in the league with a 4-4 record.

Senior forward Adam Templeton, the reigning MVC Player of the Week, added 14 points including nine in the first half.

Sophomore guard Frank Wiseler, making his second straight start at point guard, scored a career high 12 points while playing a high 34 minutes.

Drake, which leads the MVC in three-point basket (8.8 average), shot 50 percent beyond the three-point arc making 10 of 20 treys. It marked the eighth game this season in which Drake has made 10 or more treys.

After a layup by reserve senior forward Bill Eaddy gave Drake a 56-47 lead with 9:15 left in the game, the Bulldogs would not make another basket until a layup by Young with 2:59 left that gave the Bulldogs a 63-55 lead.

"We did what we needed to do to get a road win," said Drake head coach Mark Phelps. "Anytime you win on the road it is a cause for celebration."

"I'm very proud of our team. We continue to improve."

Wiseler and Templeton each scored nine points, while leading a Drake three-point shooting barrage that carried the Bulldogs to a 40-33 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs shot a sizzling 57.1 percent from three-point range in the first half, making eight of 14 shots. Five players made at least one three-point basket for Drake.

Templeton continued his torrid shooting by making three of four shots beyond the arc. He has made 37 treys this season, surpassing his entire 2008-09 output of 35.

A layup by Wiseler gave Drake its biggest lead of the first half at 27-17 with 7:18 left.

After allowing Evansville three three-point baskets in the first half, Drake held the Purple Aces to one-of-nine shooting beyond the arc in the second half.

"We did a much better job defensively in the second half," Phelps added.

Freshman forward Colt Ryan, who ranked second in the MVC in scoring with a 15.7 average, was held to    seven points, snapping a streak of three straight games in which he had scored 20 or more points

Drake, which entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA in committing the fewest turnovers per game (10.3 avg.), had just seven miscues. Meanwhile, Drake forced Evansville into 13 turnovers, while scoring 14 points off those miscues.

Wiseler, playing a career high 34 minutes, did not committ a turnover while grabbing four rebounds.

"Wow, Frank (Wiseler) played well for us on the road," Phelps added. "He has really stepped up for our team when we've need him the most."

Templeton tied a career high with four assists.

Freshman center Seth VanDeest tied a career high with four blocked shots.

Drake shot 44.9 percent from the floor.
