DES MOINES, IOWA - Indiana State used a 21-4 run to close out the game rallying to post a 60-46 Missouri Valley Conference victory past Drake Sunday night.
Drake owned a 42-39 lead following a layup by guard
Ryan Wedel (Minneapolis, Kan.) but proceeded to go the last 8 minutes 51 seconds of the game making just two of its last 11 shots while committing five turnovers.
Drake enjoyed a 26-19 halftime lead, but shot just 33.3 percent from the floor in the second half.
Meanwhile, Indiana State hit a sizzling 61.5 percent in the second period, making 16 of 26 shots.
Indiana State, which snapped a nine-game losing skid in Des Moines dating back to 1999, improved to 10-4 including a 2-1 league mark.
Drake, which was ranked 12th in the NCAA in free throw percentage, shot a season low 33.3 percent making three of nine shots. The Bulldogs missed the front end of four bonus free throw situations.
“It's disappointing that we weren't able to hold on in the second half,” said Drake coach
Mark Phelps whose team suffered its fifth straight loss while falling to 5-10 including a 0-3 MVC record. “Our shoots just aren't falling.
“We've got to dig in, bare down and find a way - the guys are determined.”
Senior guard
Josh Young (Lawton, Okla.) and freshman forward
Aaron Hawley (Rogers, Ark.) led Drake with nine points apiece.
Back-to-back three-point baskets from guards Jordan Printy and Rashad Reed keyed an 8-0 run by the Sycamores that turned a 42-39 deficit into a 47-42 advantage with 6:50 left.
After a layup by Hawley pulled Drake within 47-44, the Bulldogs would miss the front end of two bonus free throw situations.
Indiana State closed out the game making its last five shots, including two baskets apiece from guards Henry Marshall and Dwayne Lathan.
Drake held Indiana State to a season-low 19 points in the first half. It also was the fewest points Drake allowed an opponent this season.
The Bulldogs held Indiana State without a basket for the last 4:23 of the first half, while going on a 7-0 run to close out the stanza.
Young, Drake's leading scorer, took only one shot in the first period.
Hawley, senior forward
Adam Templeton (Rapid City, S.D.) and freshman center
Seth VanDeest (Bettendorf, Iowa) each grabbed a game-high six rebounds for Drake.
Young dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Drake finished the game hitting 35.2 percent from the floor, including 29.4 percent from three-point range (5-17).
Marshall led the Sycamores with 15 points, while Lathan had 12 and Reed 11.
