TERRE HAUTE, IND. - The Drake
women's soccer team came within striking distance of collecting its seventh
shutout on the campaign, but a goal by Alison Gasparovich in the 108th minute
(107:10) spoiled the Bulldogs' pursuit as Indiana State garnered a 1-0 double-overtime
victory on Friday (Oct. 8).
The loss dropped Drake's ledger to 7-4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Missouri
Valley Conference, while improving the Sycamores to 7-5-1 and 1-2 in league
play.
"It was another game where in regulation we put balls across the six on
a platter and we made a mess of them," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "Paige (Dusek) was a handful tonight. At some point we have to relieve our
defense, and give ourselves a cushion."
Indiana State registered a 14-8 advantage in shots, including 4-2 in
overtime, while limiting the Bulldogs to only three shots on goal.
Sophomore Tara Zika (St.
Louis, Mo./Ursuline) got off Drake's best opportunity to score in overtime
placing a shot on net which was hauled in by Sycamore goalkeeper Emily Lahay at
the 99:00 mark.
Zika paced the Bulldog attack with a team-high three shots, while
freshman Paige Dusek (St. Charles,
Ill./St. Charles North) added a pair of shots. Gasparovich turned in a game-best five-shot performance to
lead Indiana State.
Freshman Kalena Litch
(Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) pulled in five saves for Drake, while Lahay collected
the shutout with three saves for the Sycamores.
"In the end, Indiana State deserved to win tonight," Horner said. "We struggled when Ali (Walsh) left the
game with an injury, had unnecessary fouls that gave them momentum, and we
played tight under the pressure."
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (Oct. 10) hosting SIU
Edwardsville in Drake's final non-conference game of the season. Action gets underway at 1:00 p.m. at
the Cownie Soccer Complex.
