CEDAR FALLS, IOWA -
- The Drake University women's basketball team scored a season-low 43 points in a 62-43 Missouri Valley Conference loss at Northern Iowa Thursday night, going without a field goal in the last seven minutes 19 seconds of the game.
The Bulldogs never held a lead and trailed by double
digits throughout the bulk of the second half. Drake came within seven points,
45-38, with nine minutes to go in the second half, but was stifled by costly turnovers
that UNI turned into 18 second-half points.
Drake's previous season-low scoring output was 46 on Jan.
22 against Northern Iowa. The Bulldogs also tied a season high with 22 turnovers.
The Panthers opened the second half with a 7-2 run to extend a 13-point
lead at the 17-minute mark. Drake answered with a 9-4 run to pull within nine,
39-30, at the 12-minute mark. The Bulldogs made their final field goal of the
game, a jumper by senior Jordann Plummer (St. Louis, Mo.) to pull within eight
points, with 7:19 left to play. Back-to-back three-point plays by Northern Iowa extended the
eight-point Panther lead to a 14-point UNI advantage by the five minute mark.
Junior Kristin Turk (Des Moines, Iowa) led Drake with 14 points and seven
rebounds. Turk has led the Bulldogs in scoring in three of their last four
games.Plummer finished with nine points and three assists.
Northern Iowa's Jacqui Kalin
led all scorers with 15, including 10 in the second half. Nicole Clausen scored
12 points on four three-pointers.
Turk gave Drake the energy it needed to hang with the Panthers' long-range
game in the first half. Turk made a three-point basket at the 14:04 mark to spark a 7-2
Drake run that pulled the Bulldogs within one, 12-11, at the midpoint of the
first half. The junior made a decisive offensive rebound on a missed Alex Montgomery (Cannon Falls, Minn.) free throw attempt that led to the half's only
tie, 15-15, at the 7:30 mark.
The loss moved Drake to 13-11 overall and 6-8 in the MVC.
The Bulldogs meet Bradley in Peoria, Ill. Sunday.
