Drake Recruit Named MVP of Midwest All-Star Classic

ST. LOUIS, MO.  --  Drake men's basketball recruit Rayvonte Rice was named the most outstanding player of the Dr. Pepper Midwest All-Star Classic Sunday, which attracted the top basketball prospects from throughout the Midwest with more than 30 Division I signees on hand.

Rice, from Centennial High School in Champaign, Ill., scored a game-high 33 points (on 14-of-29 shooting) for the East All-Stars which fell to the West squad, 115-112,

Drake signee Karl Madison from Springfield, Ill. added seven points for the East squad.

Earlier, Rice was named the 2009-10 Gatorade Illinois Boys Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday.

The 6-foot-3 guard has averaged 24.3 points per game this season in leading Centennial to a 32-2 record including a third-place finish in the Illinois Class 3A state tournament.

With the honor, Rice becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award, to be announced later this month.
