DES MOINES, Iowa - The tandem of
sophomore Kevin Harp (Iowa City,
Iowa) and freshman Phillip Beeler
(Lenexa, Kan.) finished first and second respectively in the men's javelin,
while freshman Brogan Austin (Boone,
Iowa) won the men's 5,000-meter race at the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake
Stadium on Friday.
Harp won the event with his throw of
185 feet 10 inches, while Beeler was second with his toss of 173 feet 6 inches
in cool and wet conditions.
"I think on days that we have
conditions like this, you really learn how to compete and let the distances of
your throws take care of themselves," said assistant track coach Mark Kostek. "Overall, going one-two in
a field of good competition speaks highly of the mental preparation of Kevin
and Phillip. I saw some good things from both of those throwers so I am
encouraged that we are going to be better as this season progresses."
Austin accelerated through the final
lap, pulling away from the competition to finish in a time of 14:58.13, almost
10 seconds faster than Tyler Jermann, who finished second.
"It looks like he is coming into a
zone," commented head coach Natasha Brown. "You can tell with his training maturity and the way he processes
info that he is focused. He makes a plan and executes it."
Junior Ben Jaskowiak (Madison, Wis.) was 11th clocking in at 15:34.28, while
sophomore Mike Rodriguez
(Chanhassen, Minn.) crossed the line in 15:38.49 to earn 13th place.
Junior Megan
Pierce-Cramer (Omaha, Neb.) finished sixth in the women's discus throw with
her heave of 119 feet 2 inches.
In the 10,000-meter race, junior Derek Campbell (Sycamore, Ill.) earned a seventh place showing crossing
the line in 33:14.10
Senior Meredith Bell
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished ninth (18:44.30) in the 5,000-meter race, while
fellow senior Lindsay Smith
(Lakeville, Minn.) was 11th (18:46.24).
The Bulldogs return tomorrow (April 16) for a full
day of action at the Jim Duncan Invitational. The first events at Drake Stadium begin at 8:30 a.m.
