Bulldogs Win Third Straight As Drake Bests Southern Illinois, 7-0

APRIL 17, 2011

DES MOINES, Iowa - On the strength of its third-straight victory, the Drake women's tennis team assured itself of the Bulldogs' first winning campaign since 2006 with a 7-0 decision past Southern Illinois on Sunday (April 17) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

With only five available players, the Salukis were behind the eight ball from the start and Drake capitalized clinching the doubles point following an 8-4 triumph by junior Gabriela Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.) and sophomore Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) over Melanie Delsart and Jennifer Dien at the No. 1 slot.

With junior Earlynn Lauer (Wichita, Kan.) earning a default victory at the No. 6, the Bulldogs held the early 2-0 advantage before singles officially commenced.

Stretching the lead to 3-0 was junior Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia), who bettered Korey Love at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.

Sealing the deciding tally in the match at the No. 3 slot was freshman Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia), who downed Dien, 6-1, 6-4.

The rallies went back-and-forth in the remaining three contests as all were either decided in a second-set tiebreaker or went the full three sets.

After dropping the initial frame, 6-3, at No. 5 against Anastacia Simons, junior Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) rallied back to register a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6, triumph, before Krizman bested Delsart at No. 1, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Demos turned in the most impressive of the final three tilts overcoming a 4-1 second-set deficit to down Anita Lee, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Drake continues its homestand entertaining Creighton in a 4:00 p.m. contest on Friday (April 22) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
