What's Ahead: The Drake men's track and field team head east on
I-80 to partake in the Musco Twilight on Saturday (April 23) in Iowa City,
Iowa. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. with four Big 10 teams competing in the
meet.
Last Time Out: Three members of the Drake squad took home hardware
from the Jim Duncan Invitational held at Drake Stadium last weekend (April
15-16)
The tandem of
sophomore Kevin Harp (Iowa City,
Iowa) and freshman Phillip Beeler
(Lenexa, Kan.) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's javelin.
Harp won the event with his throw of 185 feet 10 inches, while Beeler was
second with his toss of 173 feet 6 inches in cool and wet conditions.
Freshman Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) won the men's
5,000-meter race as he accelerated through the final lap and pulled away from
the competition to finish in a time of 14:58.13, almost 10 seconds faster than
Tyler Jermann, who finished second.
Sophomore Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) took home
the triple jump title with his leap of 46 feet 5.50 inches, his second-best
mark of the season in the event. Karys achieved a personal best in the long
jump as he soared 23 feet 4.75 inches to finish second.
Junior Matt Jurysta (Oshawa, Ontario) had a
strong charge at the end of the 1,500-meter race crossing the line in 3:57.48
to finish third.
Senior Brandon Lewis (Plymouth, Minn.) earned
a third-place finish in the 800-meter race clocking in at 1:53.80, while junior
Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley,
Minn.) was fourth finishing in 1:54.46.
Up Next:
The Bulldogs will split up next weekend and compete at two different meets.
Some athletes will stay at home and compete in the Drake Relays (April 28-30),
while others will partake in the Kip Janvrin Invitational (April 28-29) in
Indianola, Iowa.
