CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Sophomore Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) broke his own school record in the hammer throw
while sophomore Kevin Harp (Iowa
City, Iowa) and freshman Phillip Beeler
(Lenexa, Kan.) both scored for the Bulldogs in the javelin during the first day
of competition at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track And
Field Championship on Friday (May 13).
Twombly,
who also has the school record in the indoor weight throw, set the hammer throw
mark on his toss of 171 feet 5 inches. Freshman Andy Curtis (Manchester, Iowa) also set a personal best in the
event with his throw of 153 feet 7 inches.
"The
hammer throwers performed at as high of a level as I've seen all year," said
assistant coach Mark Kostek, who
oversees the throwing events. "Isaac and Andy definitely brought their A-game
to the championship. Their high marks today are reflective of the preparation
for today's competition."
In
the javelin, Harp finished in fifth-place with his heave of 189 feet 10 inches,
while Beeler's throw of 186 feet 10 inches earned him a seventh-place showing.
"I
was thrilled that both Kevin and Phillip scored with out their best throws
today," commented head coach Natasha Brown. "Since these two guys are young athletes I'm excited for their
future."
Junior
Colin Hagan (Wichita, Kan.) was 10th
in the 10,000-meter race clocking in at 31:54.48 while fellow junior Ben Jaskowiak (Madison, Wis.) finished
13th in 32:21.03.
Action
from the Mark Messersmith Track And Field Complex begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
with the final events of the decathlon.
