Men?s Cross Country Team Looks To Defend Oz Memorial Title

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

What's Ahead: The Drake men's cross country team will head north to defend its 2010 team title at the Oz Memorial meet hosted by the University of Minnesota on Friday (Sept. 9). The meet is named after long-time Drake coach Gary Osborn. The race on the 6,000-meter course at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn., will begin at 5 p.m.

Last Time Out: Drake opened its season in strong fashion at the Bulldog Classic in Des Moines on September 2.

Drake had six runners in the top-10 of the double-dual meet between in-state rivals Iowa State and UNI. The Bulldogs won both duals, beating UNI, 20-35, and Iowa State, 15-40, on the 4,000-meter course.

Sophomore Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with a second-place finish crossing the line in 12:48.13, edging out junior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.), who finished third with a time of 12:48.50.

Freshman Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa), in his first collegiate race, garnered a fourth-place showing clocking in at 12:49.99, while sophomore Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) finished in 12:51.74 to snare fifth.

Also scoring for the Bulldogs were sophomore Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) who finished in sixth-place (12:53.42) and senior Colin Hagan (Wichita, Kan.) who was seventh (12:54.81). The senior duo of Ben Jaskowiak (Madison, Wis.) and Matt Jurysta (Oshawa, Ontario) finished 11th (13:01.71) and 16th (13:10.38) places, respectively.

A Year Ago: Led by former two-time Iowa state prep champ Brogan Austin, Drake won the Oz Memorial team title at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on September 10, 2010.

Austin, who captured the 2010 Iowa Class 3A 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs as a senior at Boone High School, was Drake's top finisher placing fifth, covering the 6,000-meter race in 19 minutes 22.55 seconds.

The Bulldogs had five runners place among the top-16 to win the team championship with 50 points, South Dakota State was second with 60 followed by host Minnesota at 90, North Dakota with 91 and South Dakota with 148.

Tim Cornish was sixth in the meet in 19:24.15, while Colin Hagan was 11th in 19:35.28. Omet Kak placed 12th in 19:36.99, while Ben Jaskowiak was 16th in 19:40.54.

Drake Earns Spot In USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Rankings: The Drake men's cross country team opened the 2011 campaign ranked 12th in the first United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest Regional poll.

The next USTFCCCA regional rankings will come out on Sept. 12.

Up Next: The Bulldogs will return to action on Sept. 24 when they compete at the Roy Griak Invitational, also held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
