What's Ahead: The
Drake men's track and field squad will stay in-state this weekend (Jan. 20-21)
when it travels to Ames, Iowa to partake in the Iowa State Open. The meet kicks
off on Friday at the Lied Recreation Center with the women's weight throw at 3
p.m., while action on Saturday begins at 10 a.m. with the women's shot put.
Last Time Out: Drake senior Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.,) won the 200-meter dash, while junior Isaac Twombly claimed the weight throw at the
Graphic Edge Alumni Meet hosted by the University of South Dakota on Jan. 14,
2012.
DeGrave, last year's
Missouri Valley Conference indoor champion in the 400-meters and runner up in
the 200, won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.30
Fellow senior Shaun James (Lawrence,
Kan.) garnered a third-place showing in the 200-meters clocking in at 22.72.
Twombly, who owns Drake
records in the indoor weight throw and the hammer throw, earned the victory in
the weight throw with a heave of 56 feet 6.75 inches.
Junior Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) had a leap of 21 feet 10.25 inches in the
long jump to finish third, while claiming a fourth-place showing in the triple
jump soaring 45 feet .25 inches. Sophomore Alex
Kaster (Omaha, Neb.)
leaped 45 feet 3 inches to finish second in the triple jump.
Sophomore Omet Kak (Des
Moines, Iowa) earned a pair of second-place finishes in his first meet of the
season. Kak ran the 3,000-meters in 8:45.97 and the 1,000-meters in 2:35.53.
Freshman Steven Jordan (McFarland,
Wis.) was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 52.06.
A Year Ago: Then sophomore Isaac Twombly broke the Drake indoor
weight throw record with a throw of 56 feet 4.50 inches at the Iowa State Open.
Twombly's
toss, which netted him a fourth place finish, smashed the former Drake record
held by Eric Bumgardner, which was 45-0.
Dan Karys jumped 46
feet 11 inches to take home the triple jump crown which marked the second
time this season he was won the triple jump at an Iowa State meet. Karys won
the event at the Iowa State Holiday preview with a leap of 46 feet 4.75 inches
on Dec. 10, 2010.
Then-freshman Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) finished
10th in the seeded 3,000-meter race in 8:34.52.
Up Next: Drake will compete in the Jayhawk
Classic on Jan. 27 in Lawrence, Kan.
