Bulldogs Persevere To Earn 5-2 Victory Over Northern Illinois

JANUARY 28, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake women's tennis team opened its home campaign in strong fashion registering a 5-2 triumph over Northern Illinois on Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Showing resolve and steely determination, the Bulldogs gritted out the triumph in a contest that featured four of the six singles contests going to a deciding third set.

Drake stole the early momentum in the match sweeping the doubles competition.  The tandem of senior Gabriela Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.) and junior Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 decision over Sara McLaughlin and Emily Rogers at the No. 1 position.

With the doubles win, Demos moved into the top-10 in school history in career doubles triumphs with 53.

The advantage swelled to 3-0 in the Bulldogs' favor after singles victories at the Nos. 2 and 6 positions courtesy of Krizman and senior Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia).

Krizman dispatched of Rogers at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, before Aguilera bested Arantza De La Torre at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.

The Huskies cracked the scoring column with a win at the No. 5 slot to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Fighting through adversity en route to garnering the deciding tally, Demos posted a dramatic 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Nelle Youel at the No. 3 position.

Sophomore Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia) put an exclamation point on Drake's triumph with a come-from-behind 6-7, 7-4, 7-6 (3) victory against McLaughlin at the top singles slot.

The Bulldogs continue action at the Mid-America Jamboree Team Dual hosting SIU Edwardsville at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center starting at 7:00 p.m. this evening.
