TULSA, Okla. - Senior James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland) and junior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) each recorded second-round singles victories
to highlight Drake's men's tennis efforts in the qualifying draw of the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships on Tuesday
(Oct. 2).
McKie continued his unblemished run
at the championship outlasting Jason Tahir of Duke in three sets, 7-6
(4), 5-7, 6-3. McKie moves
onto third-round play on Wednesday (Oct. 3) facing 52nd-rated Alexis Heugas of VCU.
Goodman was equally impressive in
his outing, besting John Warden of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-3. Challenging Goodman on Wednesday will
be 94th-ranked Daniel Kreyman of Wake Forest.
McKie and Goodman are now each one victory away from earning a bid into the Main Draw, which begins play on Thursday (Oct. 4).
Senior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) came up short in his bid to advance as
Ohio State's Chris Diaz dealt him a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 setback.
In consolation play, sophomore Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia &
Herzegovina) collected a 6-4, 6-0 decision versus Arturs Kazijev of SMU.
In doubles, the 59th-rated duo of
Ghorbel and McKie netted an 8-6 victory against Florida's Florent Diep and Mike
Alford.
Goodman and Salibasic battled VCU's
40th-ranked tandem of Alexis Heugas and Max Wennakoski, but were unable to come
away with the triumph, dropping an 8-4 contest.
Action at the ITA All-American
Championships resumes on Wednesday (Oct. 3).
