SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Freshman Taylor Scholl (Prior
Lake, Minn.) finished 83rd to lead the Drake women's cross country squad at the
NCAA Midwest Regional Friday (Nov. 9).
In her first NCAA
appearance, Scholl completed the 6-kilometer course in 22:31.58 at the Missouri
State Cross Country Course and was the top finisher representing the Bulldogs.
Drake scored 670
points on the afternoon against some of the top competition in the nation to
come in 25th place.
Amanda Marwitz (Crystal Lake, Ill.) capped
an impressive junior campaign finishing the race in 23:28.82 for 140th place.
"Regionals is always a really cool
experience," Marwitz said. "It was
nice to run against some of the top teams and push myself. I'm really proud of
our team efforts."
The freshman trio
of Cassie Aerts (David City, Neb.), Emma Huston (Des Moines,
Iowa), and Celeste Arteaga (Rock Island, Ill.) finished the scoring for
the Bulldogs.
Aerts came in 152nd place in 23:42.13 and was
closely followed by teammate Huston in 23:50.70, good for 159th place.
Arteaga finished the course in 24.02.67, to place 165th. Junior Allie Heifner (Oregon, Wis.)
crossed the finish line in 24:17.02 to come in 178th-place. She was the final
Drake competitor to finish.
Betsy Saina
of Iowa State won the meet in a time of 19:51.46. Saina was closely followed by
Al Bolton-Tuliamuk of Wichita State in 19:55.67.
The field
included 211 runners from 35 schools at the MSU Cross Country Course. Iowa
State repeated its title with a team score of 63 while Oklahoma State was
second with 95 points. Both squads will advance to the NCAA Cross Country
Championship in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 17.
This marks the final meet of the season for the Drake squad,
which will now switch its attention to the upcoming indoor track and field
season.
