What's Ahead: The Drake men's
track and field squad will compete in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference
Indoor Track and Field Championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 25
and Sunday, Feb. 26 at the UNI Dome. Start time for both days is set for 9:30
a.m.
Last Time Out: Junior Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) won the long jump
to highlight action for Drake at the Iowa Invitational on Friday, Feb. 17.
Karys soared 22 feet
11 inches in the long jump and 46 feet 8 inches in the triple jump. Karys
finished second in the triple behind teammate Alex Kaster (Omaha, Neb.), who won with a jump of
46 feet 10.75 inches.
Senior Matt Jurysta (Oshawa, Ontario) snared fifth-place
in the mile in 4:18.04.
Sophomore Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.) claimed sixth in the
200-meter dash in 22.60.
Senior Shaun James (Lawrence, Kan.) finished seventh in
the finals of the 60-meter dash in 7.09.
Freshman Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) was eighth in the
400-meter dash, clocking in at 51.44.
The sophomore duo
of Matt Eckman (Iowa City, Iowa) and Ryan Flynn (Bettendorf, Iowa) were seventh
(9:07.16) and ninth (9:16.26), respectively, in the 3,000-meters.
A Year Ago: Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) took home the 400-meter State Farm
Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship title in
decisive fashion on Feb. 27, 2011.
DeGrave won the race in 48.57, which was
almost four-tenths of a second faster than the second-place finisher, Josh
Madsen of UNI. DeGrave also became the first Drake MVC Indoor 400-meter
Champion.
DeGrave finished second in the 200-meter
dash clocking in at 21.97.
Dan Karys placed fourth in the triple jump with a
leap of 48 feet 5.50 feet, a personal best.
Then-juniors Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) and Matt Jurysta (Oshawa, Ontario) were fifth and
sixth, respectively, in the 800-meter race. Lapham ran the four-lap circuit in
1:54.00, while Jurysta crossed the line in 1:54.99.
Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) was fourth in the mile
in 4:14.15 and Brogan Austin (Boone,
Iowa) was seventh in 4:16.13. Austin also ran a time of 15:06.35 to finish 11th in the 5,000 meter race.
