Drake Track Looks Ahead To Iowa State Qualifier

What's Ahead: Members of both the Drake men's and women's track and field squads will partake in the Iowa State Qualifier on Saturday, March 3, in Ames Iowa. Start time from the Lied Recreation Center is set for 10 a.m.

Last Time Out: Two members of the Drake track and field squad won events at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track And Field Championship on Feb. 25-26 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On the men's side, sophomore Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) claimed the 5,000-meter crown crossing the line in 14.24.88 to become the first men's athlete at Drake to win the indoor 5,000-meter crown. 

Senior Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) was second in the 400-meter dash finishing in 48.73, while sophomore teammate Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.) was fifth in 49.50. DeGrave snared sixth in the 200-meters clocking in at 22.35.

In the mile, sophomore Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa), senior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) and sophomore Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Kak and Lapham had times of 4:16.19, while Brady crossed the line in 4:18.15.

Junior Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) claimed second in the long jump soaring 23 feet 10 inches. Karys soared 48 feet 1.75 inches in the triple jump to tie for fourth-place.

Austin and Kak finished third (8:35.05) and fourth (8:35.09), respectively, in the 3,000-meter race.

On the women's side, Junior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) ran a personal best of 8.44 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to win the event.

Smith edged out UNI's Olimpia Nowak by two-hundredths of a second in the finals. Smith's time of 8.44 is also the second-best mark in school history,

Additionally, Smith became the first Drake hurdler since Kasey McDaniel to win the 60-meter hurdles title.

Senior Kirsten Lake (Parker, Colo.) finished seventh in the finals of the 800 in 2:16.44.

In the mile, freshman Mariel Fulton (Louisville, Colo.) placed eighth in 5:16.68, while junior Cammy Dole (Anamosa, Iowa) came across the line in 10th in 5:18.58.

Up Next: The Iowa State Qualifier concludes the regular indoor season for the Bulldogs.
