ARLINGTON, Texas - In its
first outdoor match of the season, the 45th-rated Drake men's tennis team
registered a 4-1 victory past Sacramento State on Tuesday (March 20).
In a tilt delayed nearly three hours by rain, singles competition was
contested first with the initial team to reach four points declared the winner.
Freshman Ben Mullis
(Leicestershire, England) provided the Bulldogs their first point of the match
downing Jonathan Hultkrantz at the No. 6 slot, 6-1, 6-0.
Suffering his first loss of the dual campaign to end a 17-match winning
streak at No. 4 was sophomore Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England), who was bested by Marek Marksoo, 6-1, 6-2.
Drake then rattled off victories at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions to
secure its 14th win of the season.
Junior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax,
Tunisia) dispatched Aliaksandr Malko at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1, before junior James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland)
defeated Javier Millan at No. 2, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Earning the deciding tally at No. 3 was junior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia), who bettered Sean Kolar, 3-6,
6-1, 6-4.
The Bulldogs close out their spring trip facing SMU on Wednesday (March 21) in
Dallas at 2:00 p.m.
