What's Ahead: The Drake men's track and field
team will remain in state this weekend for the Musco Twilight hosted by the
University of Iowa on Saturday, April 21. Start time for the meet is 1:30 p.m.
This marks the final meet for the squad before the 103rd running of
the Drake Relays.

About The Meet: Iowa, Northern Iowa,
Wisconsin, Minnesota and Loyola of Chicago will challenge the Bulldogs in the
meet that will not be scored.
Last Time Out: Three-time Missouri
Valley Conference Champion Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) ran a meet record
of 51.95 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Jim Duncan Invitational on Saturday.
DeGrave, who garnered
honorable mention All-America accolades a year ago in the 400-meter hurdles,
won the event by more than a second. Sophomore Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) snared fourth in
54:08.
In the men's javelin,
sophomore Phillip Beeler (Lenexa, Kan.) won the event with a
toss of 201 feet 9 inches, while junior Kevin Harp (Iowa City, Iowa) claimed second,
throwing 192 feet 7 inches.
Junior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) broke the Drake school
record in the hammer throw with a toss of 173 feet 3 inches en route to a
second-place showing. His throw today bettered his old record of 171 feet 5
inches, which he set at the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor
Track and Field Championship. Twombly was fourth in the discus (143-11), while
sophomore Andy Curtis (Manchester, Iowa) was third (146-4).
Sophomore Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) was second in the
men's 5,000-meters crossing the line in 14:35.84. Freshman Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) nabbed fourth in
14:47.36, while sophomore Doug Brady (Cherry Creek, Colo.) was ninth in
15:06.42.
Sophomore Alex Kaster (Omaha, Neb.) soared 44 feet 4 inches
to finish second in the men's triple jump.
Fellow sophomore Ryan Flynn (Bettendorf, Iowa) snared second place
in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 9:31.80.
Junior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) claimed third
in the 800 meters running a time of 1:51.28, which ranks second in the Valley.
Senior Matt Jurysta (Oshawa, Canada) was sixth in
1:52.63.
Senior Shaun James (Lawrence, Kan.) claimed second in the
100 meters (10.95) and fifth in the 200 meters (22.14). Marsh was sixth in the
200 (22.25) while fellow sophomore Ian Wells (Champaign, Ill.) was ninth (22.55).
A Year Ago: Isaac Twombly broke his own school
record in the hammer throw at the Musco Twilight on Saturday.
Twombly's toss of 166
feet 8 inches broke his old record by two feet, which he set last spring.
Twombly, along with
Andy Curtis set personal bests
in the discus throw with their tosses of 150 feet 7 inches and 138 feet 2
inches, respectively.
Phillip Beeler finished second in the
javelin with his throw of 186 feet 7 inches, while sophomore Kevin Harp was third with his
heave of 185 feet 1 inches.
Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) soared 23 feet 0.50
inches in the long jump to place second. Karys also registered a fourth-place
showing in the triple jump with his leap of 46 feet 5.25 inches.
Jon DeGrave snared fourth-place
in the 400-meter hurdles finishing in at 53.31.
Omet Kak was fifth in the
1500 clocking in at 3:51.70, a season best. Matt Jurysta garnered a ninth-place showing crossing the line in 3:55.14. Brogan Austin (Boone,
Iowa) and Charlie Lapham were 13th
(3:56.09) and 15th (3:56.38), respectively.
Ben Jaskowiak (Madison, Wis.) registered a
fourth-place showing in the 5,000-meter race with a season best time of
15:32.79.
Up Next: The
103rd running of the Drake Relays await the Bulldogs next weekend,
as the Relays begin on Wednesday, April 25 and conclude on Saturday, April 28.
Also, Drake will send athletes to the Kip Janvrin Invitational on April 26 and
27.
