DES MOINES, Iowa - Sophomore Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) and senior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) spend a lot of time training together.
The Drake duo finished second and third, respectively in the 1500 at the 103rd running of the Drake Relays on Saturday.
Kak finished in 3:52.00, while Lapham was close behind in 3:52.93.
"This race led to a fun last lap," said Lapham. "Finishing two and three was pretty exciting and this was a fun race overall."
Kak took the lead heading into the final lap of the race to a roar from the crowd.
"When I took the lead, the crowd got crazy," said Kak. "Unfortunately, I couldn't hold it as Jeremiah Vaughn (Indiana State) he is really good and ran me down."
Lapham echoed Kak's beliefs on the crowd.
"I love running here," said Lapham. "Obviously all of the fans and the crowd gets you picked up. Something about doing workouts on this track and running here every day makes you feel like you have a little home field advantage."
Senior Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) was 10th in the 400-hurdles in 52.16.
Junior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.), for the third week in a row, broke his own school record in the hammer throw. His throw of 180 feet 7 inches earned him a 13th-place finish.
