DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University men's cross country team had three runners finish in the top eight of the Bulldog Classic Friday at Ewing Park in the team's season opener.
Fifth-year senior Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) physically held off Nick Schulze of Iowa State to finish third with a time of 12:51 on the 4-kilometer course . He was followed by Drake sophomore Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) in 12:54, and Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) in 12:58, who finished sixth and eighth respectively.
"It was great to get the season underway," Drake assistant coach Casey McDermott commented. "We were able to see where we're at with only one week of training."
Junior Ryan Flynn (Bettendorf, Iowa) finished 12th running a time of 13:03, followed by junior Matt Eckman (Iowa City, Iowa) who ran 13:21 to finish in 20th.
The Bulldogs look to compete in their first scored meet next Friday, Sept. 7 at the Oz Memorial in the Twin Cities.
